Hiking Club

The Hiking Club is dedicated to exploring the trails in and around Dona Ana County or beyond!Hiker-02

When and where does the hiking group meet?

Hikes are usually scheduled for one Saturday a month from October through April. They meet at 9:00 a.m. sharp at a predetermined meeting spot. The chairperson will send an email confirmation of the hike. Hikes are always “weather permitting.”

Do I have to be an experienced hiker?

NO! The group is open to members of all fitness levels. Most of our hikes are appropriate for people who are beginners. The chairperson will describe each hike in terms of its length and level of difficulty.

What do I wear?

Let the weather be your guide. In general, however, plan to layer your clothing so you can adjust to warmer and cooler temperatures as you hike. Perhaps, most importantly, wear good hiking boots if you can.

What do I have to bring?

Always bring water and sunscreen! We also encourage members to bring a snack (e.g., granola bar, fruit). Some members bring cell phones, cameras, and binoculars.

May I bring a friend, significant other, spouse, or child?

You are welcome to bring a friend, significant other, or spouse, but no children under 18 years old.

Does the group have liability insurance or other coverage?

NO! Everyone hikes at their own risk. We do not go on expert-level hikes that require technical skill, advanced training, or special equipment. And, of course, we keep together and look out for one another.

What does it cost to participate?

There is no cost to participate in this group (though some areas charge a nominal fee for a day use pass (per car).
