Out ‘n’ About Club Gets Spooky at
Chloride Ghost Town
November 7, 2015
The Out ’n’ About Club took in a little of New Mexico history on a beautiful Saturday in November, at Chloride, NM. Chloride sprung up in 1880, two years after Briton Harry Pye chanced upon silver ore, a discovery he initially kept secret. Word eventually got out, prompting a boom. In its heyday, Chloride had nine saloons, a general store, a dry goods store, a millinery shop, a restaurant, a butcher shop, a candy store, a pharmacy, a Chinese laundry, a photography studio, a school, and two hotels. The Black Range newspaper was printed in Chloride from 1882 to 1896. The demise of Chloride began with the Silver Panic of 1893 and was hastened by the presidential election of 1896, which resulted in a drastic decline in silver prices.
Today, there are 11 residents and many of Chloride’s original structures still stand. The old Pioneer Store is a museum; next door the former Monte Cristo Saloon and Dance Hall houses a gift shop and gallery featuring work by local artists. Both are open seven days a week from 10am-4pm. There is even a restaurant which is opened on the weekends (opens at 11am Thursday-Sunday).
Gourmet Club had a
Rootin’ Tootin’ Cowboy Dinner
October 17, 2015
Gourmet Club had its first dinner of the season and celebrated the Cowboy! Eddy Harrison, a local cowboy singer, serenaded the group out under the stars while we drank wine, beer and ate a belly full of appetizers. The sky was clear and warm and the stars were plentiful! Group members prepared typical fare for on the trail with BBQ brisket, boneless BBQ chicken breasts and BBQ sausage. All that meat was complimented with a black bean and corn salad, sweet coleslaw, BBQ baked beans, and baby baked potatoes. We enjoyed a number of great appetizers, and ended with Cuppa Cuppa Cuppa Cake, Apple Crisp, a chocolate bundt cake, fresh fruit and homemade blueberry lemonade. It was a perfect gourmet dinner night.
Out ‘n’ About Club Goes Wine Tasting!
October 10, 2015
Temperature in the 70s, light breeze, and sunny – Saturday was a perfect day for another fun outing. First stop Chope’s Bar & Café, in La Mesa, NM, famous for some of the best Mexican food in the Mesilla Valley. Later we visited the Sombra Antiqua Winery in Chamberino, NM, where they grow grapes for Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Albariño, Barbera and Sombra Antigua’s signature wine, Malbec. Then we drove to the Zin Valle Vineyards & Winery located in Canutillo, TX, just outside of El Paso, where the Rising Star brand of wine was born. A good time was had by all!!

Out ‘n’ About Club Goes Apple Pickin’
September 26, 2015
The 2nd “Making Memories Apple Orchard Outing” was a huge success. First stop was Memories Restaurant for a delicious lunch, and then we headed to Nichols Apple Orchard in La Luz, NM. Run by Bob and Sue, we enjoyed picking apples AND figs on 20 acres of orchard! Because the apples were only $1 per pound, we picked as many as we could carry! Next stop was The Old Apple Barn where we enjoyed the country ambiance, homemade fudge and delicious orange creamsicle shakes! The outing was fun, the weather was great, and the new friendships made were priceless.

The Out ‘n’ About Club visits Historic Fort Selden in Radium Springs, NM
March 14, 2015
“Fort Selden was established to protect settlers and railroad construction crews in the Mesilla Valley and the Jornada del Muerto from Apaches. The first regular army troops to garrison it were four companies of the black 125th Infantry. General Douglas MacArthur spent two years of his childhood here. The Fort was finally abandoned in 1891.” (as written on the Historic Marker)
We took a day trip out to the Fort Selden Historic Monument on Saturday, March 14 and went through the small, but very nice museum about the forts history. Then we headed outside to see the actual ruins, and pulled up a stump to listen to the stories of Ft. Selden, as told by period reenactors.
We all enjoyed a great lunch at Cocina Mexicana, just east of Ft. Seldon, and forgot to take pictures at the Ft. Selden Winery as we were too occupied sipping wine to find the camera! A fun day was had by all.
